What is wheat grass? Wheatgrass is the young grass of the wheat plant, Triticum aestivum. Wheatgrass provides a concentrated amount of nutrients, including iron, calcium, magnesium, amino acids, chlorophyll, and vitamins A, C and E. Wheatgrass fans say that its rich nutrient content boosts immunity, kills harmful bacteria in your digestive system, and rids your body of waste.
My daughter-in-law became intrigued with wheat grass and has begun growing some in her home. She generously gave me some to try, knowing I love to try and experiment with healthy foods.
This is what it looks like, along with the other ingredients I used for my morning smoothie… (kale not shown here)
According to the Vitamix website, with the high powered motor of this blender, you can use this grass in a smoothie. Most other sources recommend juicing the grass. Since I don’t have a juicer, I tried this concoction in my Vitamix.
I also added a scoop of this protein powder. I have tried various protein powders, but have settled on this one. I love it and order it from Amazon.
I wasn’t sure how much wheat grass to add, so I cut a couple inches off off the top, along with the woody center of this pineapple, 2” of cucumber, one large kale leaf, three ice cubes, protein powder and a handful of green grapes. I always save the woody centers of the pineapple because that part has the richest concentration of the healthy enzymes. I added one cup of almond milk.
1. Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container and secure lid.
2. Select Variable 1.
3. Turn machine on and quickly increase speed to Variable 10, then to High.
4. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute or until desired consistency is reached.
This was very pleasant tasting. However, we are used to eating green smoothies most every morning, so the taste of the greens was very familiar. I seldom drink coffee anymore in the morning since I have discovered this power drink!
I am going to do further research on growing wheatgrass and it’s nutritional advantages. If any of my blog followers have had any experience with this please post your comments!

Thank you for this post! Especially since my first attempt at just “throwing in whatever I had on hand” advice from the class didn’t work particularly great for me!!! Great blog!!!
I am curious what you threw in!!
I don’t even remember, but I’m glad to say I persevered and after a few weeks, tried it again, and made a delicious green smoothie!!
Sooo, tell me how she grew the wheat grass? Seeds from somewhere? Thanks! =)
Melanie,
She went to our local health food store and got the seeds and supplies. I have spent some time today online and see that there are a number of companies that sell the stuff too. I watched a you-tube video on how to do it. However, in our tiny apt. there just is no extra room.
