Holiday Mix

Who doesn’t love to snack on a handful or two of the perfect sweet and salty mix? Quite often the prepared store bought mixes are high in fat, sugar and sodium. Today’s recipe is one my aunt has made for years. She would faithfully prepare this mix, then package up gift sacks to give away during the holiday season. You will not be able to stop with just one or two handfuls of this addictive mix!

Her recipe actually called for puffed wheat cereal, however, I found this puffed brown rice cereal in our health food section at the grocery store. I loved it…no additives and no preservatives!

Mix 6 c. of the cereal with 2 c. of mixed nuts and 1/2 c. brown sugar. I added a few Cheerios too!

In a saucepan, heat to just boiling, 1/4 c. butter and 1/4 c. honey. Stir well into cereal mixture. Transfer to a large baking pan and bake at 300 for 35 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from oven, cool and then store in covered container.

This is a perfect mixture to bring along to any holiday gathering. If there are peanut allergy issues, this could be made with a mixture of different dried cereals. You could package this up in smaller plastic holiday sacks and tie with festive ribbons for a lovely hostess gift!
